| This treaty was intended to solve the dispute over newly found land after Christopher Columbus returned from his discoveries. Portugal emerged with an enhanced position by gaining a larger portion of South America (Brazil). Spain had gained control of most of the New World. The Treaty was not strictly enforced especially when the King of Portugal was also the King of Spain. Spain and Portugal governments did not have enough power or control to maintain these lines. |
